Joint operation with the Philippine Army

Joint operation with the Philippine Army

[시사타임즈 = 이철원 시사타임즈 회장] When Korean troops are dispatched abroad, even if they are dispatched at the request of the UN or host country, they are bound to be foreign troops, not those of that country. No matter how well-intentioned dispatched troops are, the appearance of foreign troops in their own country cannot be seen as good in the eyes of the people of that country from the beginning. Therefore, the contingent units dispatched overseas to work should respect the culture and customs of the host country more, and act with consideration and consideration for the locals.

For this reason, from the stage of preparation for dispatch, it was continuously emphasized to educate the war veterans of the Arau Units on the culture and customs of the Philippines and to include them in the tenets of the contingent soldiers and put them into action. In addition, close cooperation with the host country's armed forces is necessary for the smooth operation of the contingent units, and it is effective to operate jointly if possible. A combined operation cannot be said to be necessarily effective when the military does not receive trust and trust from its own people as in the case of the South Vietnamese army in the past. However, if the people of that country believe and trust their own military, the probability of success of the operation is high only when they conduct a joint operation with the host country's military who knows the local situation best.

I thought of a joint operation with the Philippine Army from a strategic point of view during local reconnaissance before dispatching the troops, for the following reasons. First, it was because the joint operation with the Philippine army could reduce the local people's rejection of the Korean army and ensure the safety of the soldiers. If the South Korean military were to carry firearms for their own safety, it would inevitably appear intimidating to local residents. There was some confusion right after the typhoon, but the local security was relatively good, and there was no need to carry firearms that could be objectionable to local residents during disaster recovery. The Philippine military has also requested that we not carry firearms during outdoor activities, saying that they are responsible for our safety for this reason.

Second, it was easier to achieve a tangible effect to do it with the Philippine Army than to do the restoration work with the Arau Unit alone, but it was also a way to solve the realistic problem of the lack of skills of our soldiers. Although we were composed of combat engineers and had insufficient construction technology, the Philippine Army was a construction engineer and excelled in construction techniques such as woodworking and plastering. A synergistic effect could be exerted by working together with the South Korean Army equipped with excellent equipment and the Philippine Army engineer with skilled technology.

The combined operation effectively promoted the activities of the Arau unit to the Philippine government and military through the Philippine Army, and it was also possible to obtain the secondary effect of raising the status of the Philippine Army to the Philippine people. I thought of the Philippine Army as members of the Arau unit, and provided medical assistance and friendly basketball games on a regular basis. During the shift, an encouraging dinner was given and a commendation was given to the commander of the ROK Army Joint Support Group. Perhaps thanks to these efforts, the Philippine Army worked like us at night and on holidays, and was proud of carrying out its duties with the Arau Unit. Through the combined operation with the Philippine Army, we were able to efficiently carry out the recovery operation in a state where safety was secured and achieve our objective early.
