[시사타임즈 = 이성용 회장, 김순아 기자] 정부의 코로나 정치 방역으로 인해, 한국교회 약 16% 정도가 10개의 교회 중 약 2개 교회가 문을 닫았습니다”- 소강석 목사에게 들어 보았다.

소강석 한교총 대표회장은 코로나 19로 인해 어려워진 한국교회 앞에 방역 질서에 앞장서며 예배를 드려오면서, 이성용 발행인과의 대담에서 이렇게 말합니다. 

 

“여러분! 한국교회 예배 회복되어야 합니다. 이 부분 귀를 기울여 주세요. 종교의 자유가 있고 집회의 자유가 있는 이 나라에 이게 왠 말입니까?

 

정부의 코로나 정치 방역으로 인해 우리 한국교회 약 16% 정도가, 10개의 교회 중 약 2개가 조금 안 되는 교회가 문을 닫았습니다.

 

여기에 대해 한국교회 많은 목회자분들이 이에 대해 분노하고 성토하고 계십니다. 소강석 목사는 계속해서 말합니다. ”지금 한국교회는 코로나 19 상황에서 한국교회는 어려움의 긴 터널을 지나고 있습니다. 코로나가 지나간 이후에도 본래의 모습으로 돌아가기는 어려울 것이란 전문가의 예측은 우리 마음을 더욱 무겁게 합니다.

 

또 과학적 근거도 없이 불공정하게 정한 정부의 사회 거리 두기 단계에 따른 현장예배 인원 기준은 목회자들과 현장예배를 사모하는 성도들의 공분을 사기에 충분하다고 생각합니다.

 

이 같은 불공정의 시간이 길어지면서 어떤 분들은 6.25와 일제 치하에서도 일사 각오 신앙으로 믿음을 지켰던 선진들의 각오를 되새기며, 코로나 상황에서 한국교회는 신앙을 버리고 정부와 타협했다고 비판하시는 분들도 있습니다. 목사로서 그분들의 의분과 진심은 충분히 이해하고도 남습니다. 그러나 그때와 지금의 코로나 전염병 재난 상황을 동일하게 비교하며 너무 이분법적으로 비판하고 정죄하는 것은 바람직한 자세는 아니라고 생각합니다. 코로나의 고통과 상처 속에서 어느 누가 고통스럽지 않으며 어느 누가 빠른 회복을 원하지 않겠습니까?

 

어릴 적 저의 부모님은 언성을 높이며 자주 다투셨습니다. 이유는 당신들의 문제가 아닌 가족보다 형제를 우선 생각하셨던 아버님의 희생 때문이었습니다. 장남이셨던 아버님은 동생들이 당한 어려움을 외면하시지 못하셨고 논과 밭을 팔아 도와주셨습니다. 그 결과 이전에 제법 넉넉했던 가세는 많이 기울었고 그 어려움은 고스란히 어머니와 우리 형제들이 겪어야 했기 때문입니다.

 

저는 코로나를 지나는 중심에서 예장 합동 총회장과 한교총 대표회장직을 감당하며 장손과 가장이라는 짐을 함께 지셔야 했던 아버님의 고충을 이제야 조금 이해할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

 

작금의 한국교회는 우리나라 제일의 종교로서 한국사회를 대표하는 가장과 같은 위치에 서 있습니다. 가장은 우리 식구만 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 형제와 이웃들을 희생과 섬김으로 아우르며 책임 있는 모습을 보여야, 하는 것입니다.

 

소강석(한교총 대표회장)은 차별적인 정책과 기준으로 목회 현장에서 어려움을 호소하시는 교회와 목사님들의 항변을 저는 마음으로 부터 존중하고 지지합니다.

 

그래서 저는 종교의 자유와 예배의 자유를 침해받은 교회가 소송을 진행할 때 개인적으로 지원을 하였고, 집합금지나 폐쇄 명령을 받은 교회를 풀어 주는데 적극적으로 도와 드렸습니다.

 

그러나 코로나로 인한 어려움은 교회뿐 아니라 한국사회 전체가 겪고 있습니다. 조금만 더 조금만 더 견디면 회복될 것이라고 버텨 왔던 소상공인들과 자영업자들은 이제 더 이상 갈 곳이 없는 지경에까지 이르렀습니다.

 

그 가운데 정부의 방역지침이 교회를 향해 더 불공정하다는 원망의 소리가 있습니다. 저도 한교총 대표회장으로 정부 관계자들에게 이 같은 내용을 수없이 강조하여 전달하였습니다. 그리고 그 요구의 바탕에는 교회는 자율적 방역으로 안전한 예배를 드릴 수 있도록 하겠다는 약속이 있었습니다.

 

하지만 공교롭게도 교회에 대한 참석기준 완화 조치가 발표될 즈음에 교회를 통해 다수의 확진자가 발생하는 일이 일어났습니다. 정말 오랫동안 노력을 했던 저에게는 너무나도 가슴 아프고 청천 병력과도 같은 소식이었습니다.

 

이어서 소강석 한교총 대표회장은 “물론 교회에서 확진자가 발생한 것이 과도하게 과장 된 것도 사실입니다. 하지만 중요한 것은 교회가 방역수칙을 지키지 않아 내부감염이 발생했다는 것입니다.

 

처음에는 이단이나 군소 교단의 통제가 되지 않는 교회들이라고 답변을 했지만 건전한 교단 소속 교회들에서도 확진자들이 속속 발생하는 상황에서 저는 교회의 입장만을 요구할 수 없는 지경에 이른 것입니다.

 

저는 코로나 팬데믹 상황이 지나고 나면 정부의 일방적이고 획일적인 방역 정책의 과오에 대해 반드시 책임을 물어야 한다고 생각합니다. 정부와 방역당국의 조치에 불공정이 있었다면 후에라도 반드시 그 책임을 물어야 합니다.

 

언론의 공정하지 못한 보도가 있다면 그 또한 기사를 보고 거짓과 진실을 가름하고 분별하는 힘을 길러야 합니다. 그런데 많은 교회 성장학자들은 코로나 이후 교회의 회복 탄력성이 낙관적이지 않을 것이라고 예측합니다.

 

그러므로 한국교회는 위드 코로나 시대를 준비해야 합니다.

 

첫째, 코로나로 삶이 무너진 성도들과 이웃들이 안심하고 찾아와 위로받고 건강한 삶을 회복할 수 있는 안전한 예배 공동체, 생활 공동체를 준비해야 합니다. 이를 위해서는 철저한 방역과 출입자 관리를 통해 안전하고 편리한 예배 환경을 준비해야 할 것입니다.

 

둘째, 선한 소통으로 코로나로 인해 단절되고 막혀 있던 교회와 성도, 성도와 성도, 성도와 이웃의 네트워크를 연결해야 합니다.

 

셋째, 성도들과의 거룩하고 감격적인 만남을 위해 하이 콘셉트, 하이터치를 준비해야합니다. 저희 교회는 올해 코로나 2차 대유행이 발생하기 전 종료를 앞두고 보라빛 초청 주일과 홀리 트라이브 주일을 계획하여 성도들을 초청하였습니다.

 

그때 많은, 성도들이 코로나에 대한 두려움을 극복하고 현장으로 달려오는 것을 경험하였습니다. 이제 우리는 위드 코로나를 앞두고 미리 성도들과의 만남을 준비해야 합니다. 현장 예배인원 100% 허락을 요구하기 이전에 10%, 20%, 30% 비록 아쉽기는 하지만 조금씩 현장예배 회복을 위해 필요한 것이 무엇인지 준비하는 지혜가 필요합니다.

 

넷째, 교회만이 가질 수 있는 생명력 있는 영적 에너지를 지역사회와 세상으로 흘려보내야 합니다. 특별히 내일쯤(금요일)이면 중대본에서 방역 완화 단계를 발표할 것입니다. 분명히 정부가 약속한 대로 만족할 순 없지만, 백신 인센티브를 배려해 줄 것입니다. 한국교회는 안전한 예배를 드리며 생명의 에너지를 지역사회로 흘려보낼 준비를 해야 합니다.

 

세월이 많이 지나 이제 저도 아버지와 가장이 되었습니다. 어릴 적 아버지와 어머니 모두 가족을 사랑하는 분이셨습니다. 아버지의 희생으로 삼촌들은 큰 위기를 잘 넘기셨고, 어머니의 사랑으로 우리 형제들도 자라 각자의 자리에서 자신의 몫을 감당하고 있습니다.

 

이렇게 세월이 지나면 모든 것이 협력하여 선을 이루는 것을 그때는 왜 그리 싸우셨는지 회한의 마음이 들기도 합니다. 오늘도 한국교회를 위해 기도하는 가운데, 가장으로 그 짐을 홀로 지셨던 아버지가 문득 생각이 납니다. 그리고 우리의 연약함을 도우시기 위해 아들을 십자가에 내어주신, 참 아버지 되신 하나님을 바라봅니다.”

So, Kang-Seok, president of the THE UNITED CHRISTIAN CHURCHES OF KOREA (UCCA), who has been taking the lead in the quarantine order in front of Korean churches that have become difficult due to Corona 19. said in a conversation with publisher Lee Seong-Yong, "Everyone! The worship of the Korean church must be restored. Please listen to me. What is happening in a country where there is freedom of religion and freedom of assembly? About 16% of our Korean churches which means a little less than 2 out of 10 churches have closed due to the government's corona virus quarantine.

 

Pastor Kang Seok says, “Right now, the Korean church is going through a long tunnel of difficulties amid the COVID-19 situation. According to expert, it will be difficult to return to the world that we lived in even after the corona virus has passed.

 

In addition, the government's unfairly set standards for the number of on-site worshipers according to the social distancing stage without scientific basis is enough to provoke the outrage of pastors and church members who eager for on-site worship.

 

As the time of injustice has increased, some people are reminded of the settlement of the advanced leaders who kept their faith with every resolution even under the Japanese colonial rule and 6.25, while others criticize the Korean church for abandoning their faith and compromising with the government in the corona situation. As a pastor, I can fully understand their wrath and sincerity.

 

However, I do not think it is a desirable attitude to criticize and condemn to dichotomously by comparing the disaster situation of the corona epidemic then and now in the same way. Amid the pain and scars of corona, who is not suffering, we hope it will end soon.

 

When I was young, my parents argued often. The reason was not because of their own problems, but because of my father's sacrifice, who put his brothers first over his life.

 

Father, who was the eldest son, could not turn away from the difficulties faced by the younger brothers, so he helped by selling his own property. As a result, it became difficult, and the hardship had to be endured by my mother and our brothers.

 

After serving as President of UCCA, I think I can understand a little bit of my father's struggles now for he had to bear the burden of being the eldest son and the head of the family.

 

The current Korean church is the number one religion in Korea, and it stands in the same position as a father of family. The head of a household should not think only of our family members, but we must show our responsibility by encompassing our brothers and sisters with sacrifice and service.

 

Kang-Seok So (Chairman of the UNITED CHRISTIAN CHURCHES OF KOREA) respects and supports the protests of churches and pastors who complain of difficulties in the pastoral field due to discriminatory policies and standards.

 

So, when a church whose freedom of religion and freedom of worship was infringed on a filed lawsuit, I personally supported it and have been trying to help release the church that was ordered to be banned or shutdown.

 

However, the difficulties caused by the corona are not only experienced by the church, but also by the entire Korean society. Small business owners and the self-employed, who had endured that they would recover with just a little more patience, have now reached a point where they have nowhere else to go.

 

These days, there are voices of resentment that the government's quarantine guidelines are unfair to the church. As a representative of the UCCA, I have emphasized and delivered this message to government officials countless times as there was a promise that the church would be able to provide safe worship through voluntary quarantine.

 

Coincidentally, around the time the measures to ease the attendance standards for churches were announced, numerous confirmed cases occurred through the churches. It was a heart-breaking news for me, who have worked hard for a long time.

 

Then, Kang-Seok So, President of the UCCA, said, “Of course, it is true that the number of confirmed cases in the church is exaggerated. However, the important thing is that the church did not follow the quarantine rules and internal infection have occurred.

 

At first, I replied that they were churches that were not controlled by cults or small denominations, but in a situation where confirmed cases are occurring one after another even in churches belonging to healthy denominations, I have reached a point where I cannot claim the position of the church alone.

 

I believe that once the corona pandemic is over, the government must be held accountable for the mistakes of the government's unilateral and uniform quarantine policy. If there was any unfairness in the measures taken by the government and quarantine authorities, they must be held accountable even afterward.

 

If there is an unfair report by the media, it should also develop the power to distinguish between the lies and truth by looking at the articles. However, many church growth scholars predict that the resilience of the church after the coronavirus will not be optimistic.

 

Therefore, the Korean church must prepare for the era of the Corona.

 

First, we need to prepare a safe worship community and living community where believers and neighbors whose lives have been destroyed by the corona can come to us with confidence and be comforted and restore a healthy life. To this end, it is necessary to prepare a safe and convenient worship environment through thorough quarantine and access control.

 

Second, we need to connect the networks of the church and the saints, the saints and the saints, and the saints and the neighbors, which have been cut off and blocked by the Corona virus through good communication.

 

Third, we need to prepare a high concept and high touch for a holy and emotional meeting with the saints. Before the end of this year's Corona 2 pandemic, our church invited members by planning Purple Invitation Sunday and Holy Tribe Sunday.

 

At that time, many believers overcame the fear of Corona and experienced running to the field. Now we must prepare for a meeting for us with the saints ahead of Corona. 100% of the number of on-site worshipers 10%, 20%, 30% before requesting permission Although it is disappointing, little by little, wisdom is needed to prepare what is necessary for the restoration of on-site worship.

 

Fourth, the vital spiritual energy that only the church can have should flow into the community and the world. The Korean church should be prepared to provide safe worship services and release the energy of life to the local community.

 

Many years have passed, and now I have become a father and a head of the household. When I was young, my father and mother both loved my family. With the sacrifice of the father, the uncles overcame the great crisis well, and with the love of the mother, our brothers also grew up and are fulfilling their share in their respective places.

 

As the years passed, I sometimes felt remorse as to why we fought so hard back then for everything to work together well. Today, while praying for the Korean church, I suddenly think of my father, who carried the burden alone as the head of the household. And I look to God, the true Father, who gave his Son to the cross to help us in our weakness.
