K-POP Dance Contest

[시사타임즈 = 이철원 시사타임즈 회장] The wounds of the typhoon were unbearable pain for the local residents that went beyond hardship and threatened their lives. In order for the victims of frustration and despair to overcome the trauma caused by the typhoon and gain the strength to stand up again, the Arau Unit worked harder to become true friends who share pain and sorrow. In addition, we created a time for people to laugh and shed tears naturally so that they can reveal and resolve the sadness and pain that are latent in the unconscious of the residents. The completion of the ceremony as a village festival and the screening of movies while touring villages were all activities with this mental purification in mind.

Filipinos enjoy dancing and singing more than any other country. Korean music was broadcast every day on the radio under the influence of Hallyu, and many young people enjoyed K-pop. So, in cooperation with the Korean Cultural Center, I planned a K-POP dance contest. Since November 8 was the first anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan and the unit was to be withdrawn at the end of the year, it was intended to convey a message of courage and hope to the local residents and to commemorate the activities of the unit Arau over the past year.

The contest preliminaries were held for two days on November 6th and 7th, with 32 teams applying for participation, and all the soldiers who gathered to watch the preliminaries were so outstanding that they couldn't take their eyes off them. Only the first 6 teams were scheduled to advance to the finals, but the judges could not easily make a decision, so 9 teams were selected, 3 more than expected.

On the morning of the contest day on November 9, the day after the 1st anniversary of the typhoon, the Philippine military and police conducted a safety check and explosives check at the event site, and security teams were deployed at every entrance. Unlike other events, all the VIPs arrived before the performance, and about 2,000 spectators filled the Normal University auditorium. However, I couldn't wait for the MCs from Manila, so an interpreting officer conducted it, and when the first congratulatory performance of the soldiers of the Arau Unit began, the hall was filled with the heat of a K-pop dance contest.

The 9 participating teams selected for the finals improved their skills compared to the preliminary rounds, making them laugh, cheer and applaud. In the lottery held between performances, all the spectators, including the participants and judges, eagerly looked at the lottery tickets, surprised by the generous prizes such as TV, computer, bicycle, and microwave oven. The Filipino celebration performance team from Manila showed the essence of K-POP cover dance. We didn't know it, but as most locals know, it was a famous K-pop cover dance team in the Philippines. Even after the performance was over, many spectators were waiting in line to take a photo with them.

All events ended with the encore performance of the 1st place team in the Arau K-Pop Dance Contest. Since it was a contest, the participating teams were ranked, but all participating teams were winners, and all audiences were also winners. This is because all 32 participating teams and spectators who participated in the preliminary round through the K-POP dance contest would have been healed a little bit from the pain caused by Typhoon Haiyan and gained new life force.
