Argentina- Korea, Hoping to Be the Opening Door of Middle & Latin America’s Cultural and Industrial Jumping-Up.

- Special Interview with Jorge Coscia, the Minister of the Department of Culture of Argentina  Federal Government-

Mr. Jorge Coscia, the Minister of the Department of Culture of Argentina Federal government. SiSA TIMES
[SiSa Times = Dr.Chun, Se-Whan] Jorge Coscia,
the Minister of the Department of Culture of Argentina Federal Government visited The Republic of  Korea on 5th of August, 2012. In the memory of 50th anniversary of amity between The Republic of  Korea and Argentina, Mr. Coscia flew into Seoul. The purpose is to further friendships, to promote cooperation for both benefits, and to make cultural exchanges between the two.

Mr. Coscia had a good experience by looking around Yeo-Soo EXPO 2012 and In-Sa Dong (one of traditional villages in the midst of Seoul), and had an interview with SISA TIMES about future relationships and cooperation schemes between   Argentina and The Republic of Korea.

This is your first visit to The Republic of  Korea. What do you feel about The Republic of Korea?

Before coming here, I could get lots of information about The Republic of Korea. However, what I could find at first-hand are well-advanced appearance of The Republic of Korea, cultural sense of superiority, kindness, and deep consideration of Korean people.

In particular, today, I flew from Yeo-Soo to Seoul. As soon as arrival, I could find out that my luggage came out of the cargo first. It made me feel deep, careful consideration and kind human nature of Koreans.

I heard you have been to Yeo-Soo EXPO 2012. What do you feel about the event? And what is the most impressive thing to you?

It’s so impressive! They said that the size is smaller than Shanghai EXPO. When I see it, the size seems to be smaller than that, However, in terms of technology, my sights witness far brilliantly advanced figure of the EXPO, which cannot be compared to that of Shanghai. I myself took many video clips with my mobile phone of 3D pictures of Yeo-Soo EXPO 2012.

We are coming to the 50th anniversary of amity. During the period, what kind of relationships do you think could make progresses between  Argentina and The Republic of Korea ?

I do not know the very deep details on the relationships between us for that period, but it may be imperative to look at the Korean society in Argentina when we talk about how much important our relationships are.

Even though there are Asian communities such as Japanese community in Argentina, it is rare to be able to find a good community such as Korean communities in Argentina. Koreans have accustomed themselves to the main streams of Argentina, become distinguished themselves in many fields of lives, and further done their own roles in the society of Argentina. For instance, I have a Korean aide. He takes charge of all relationships and cultural cooperation between Argentina and East Asian countries, from which we could know how much deep and meaningful Koreans’ roles have been in Argentina.

And it is obviously meaningful to look squarely the fact that Korean community in Florece, the “Flower Town”, which is the place where Koreans have successfully settled down, has taken its location in the core areas of Argentina.

Looking-back the period of past 50 years shows that Argentina’s relationships to others, including The Republic of Korea, had not been stable because we have went through political and economical turbulent times for the period. But, the last ten years have guided us into the political, social, and economical stability, and into the return of democracy so that, I think, we can maintain closer, meaningful relationships.

Basically, Argentina has kept an equal treatment to every country based on the same level. So we cherish our relationship with The Republic of Korea, and we value every relationship with other countries as highly important as each has.

What areas do you think we have to build up cooperative exertions?

Cooperation between Argentina and The Republic of Korea  could be in many areas and also in many different levels. As for cultural things, we hope to put focus on movie and media industries. And basically we hope to build up mutual cooperation with The Republic of  Korea in all cultural industries.

It may be obvious that Argentina reminds Koreans of “soccer.” What does Korea occur into your mind?

Korea occurs “Industry & Technology” to our minds. We have 200 million m2 of land and various climate conditions, so we have one-sided in agriculture rather than industrialization. We may be considered as ‘farmers’ now. However, I think that it will be far better to sell off agricultural products to all over the world by shipment.

We, of course, are never behind others in technology, let alone agriculture industry. We made an airplane in 1952.

Politically entangled matters have dragged industrial development of Argentina to fall back. Now it is realized that we come to the phase to build up economic revival again through emphasizing industrialization rather than only on agriculture.

I do believe that Korea may be the important and necessary model to us. The Republic of Korea does not have much natural resource, but has achieved its economical growth through technology. I want to contribute to my home from the model of The Republic of Korea.

We know that you were an active, capable movie director. In fact, not many movies of Argentina have been introduced in The Republic of Korea. What about movie market of Argentina? And what do you have an opinion about that of The Republic of Korea?

My occupation is a movie director. Once I was a scenario writer. We do not know about Korean movies, either. We have a thirsty wanting in picture culture exchange. The landscape of ignorance of both is due to the monopoly of Hollywood movies. We film normally one hundred pieces of movie a year. Besides, the special law of media enables us to take a shoot of documentary films, too.

There is one Korean movie, a remake of an Argentina movie, which is a hit in the first half of the year 2012. The title is “All Things of My Wife.” Have you heard of that?

Yes, I know it. Many are of high quality in the perspective of art, and many received medals at the Kahn Movie Festival among Argentina movies.

It may be so good for Seoul to be the door for Argentina movies to spread out into the Orient, and also Buenos Aires becomes to do the same role for Korean movies into the Middle & Latin America countries. I think it is possible to make movies together because Korean communities in Argentina are big and so well.

Besides movie sector, what parts can we make an exchange in the side of culture? And what should we both do for the realization of cultural exchanges?

The inclusion may be in all areas as we can consider. Among many, Design industry may be a good example of answer. And clothing design, raw materials, music etc., as well.

Game industry also might be included. We export many games. But the export to South Korea may be the same as exporting ice to the North Pole.

The Republic of Korea grows very hot because of 2012 London Olympics. And have you watched a performance of Korean athletes? If so, what did you feel about it?

My busy schedule does not give me enough time to watch Olympic games. In spite of that, I heard Korean national soccer team has done so well. They say that we are one of the strongest countries in soccer, but I always feel nervous whenever I watch soccer game between Argentina and Korea. Because The Republic of  Korea, in Asian countries, has been well-known as a very strong country in soccer, games between us would make me feel nervous.

It is a big news that Korean national soccer team went to the quarterfinals, and is going to take a match against Brazil for the final. And then Brazil is our neighbor country and at the same time, it always has been our rival, so many different emotions come and go in my mind to the game of Korea and Brazil.

Just as many want England to have a win over Argentina whenever both are going to have an A match, so we hope that  The Republic of Korea defeats Brazil on the field. It is so natural that there may be rivals inside leagues, and also inter-nations.

We have the national election for President of Korea this year. Would you give an advice and asking to President runners?

Please take up national policies for Korean to make advance towards the world, rather than remain in the inside only.

We, Argentina, are the people who are peaceful and placid personality, but have been suffered from many invasions of others and lots of internal disturbances.

Korea had been suffered from the Japanese invasion and ruling, and we experienced a very sad difficulty due to military governments under which soldiers would kill people. Through these, we have grown out of lots of sufferings and pains to make an advance into peaceful country, to command with peaceful means, and to hope to rise up as a big country in the world.

Do you have a plan to revisit here?

Of course, this became to be shorter than the plan due to my personal circumstances. I leave here with full heart to visit again.

Lastly, would you give a remark to Korean people?

I could make an access to lots of information about Korean people before departure, and I have watched you with affection and concern. I have engaged in movies, so always I’ve done my jobs with a certain kind of image. I have such good and deep impressions on you: the people of being diligent, sincere, and making ceaseless efforts for development.

Let me take an example. I had been to a library at one o’clock in the morning in front of Congress of Argentina. The inside was empty, but there were students studying. They were Korean students. The experience engraved very strong impressions of Korea in me

I think that the globe is in danger and the word “danger” has two meanings: it means threatening and fear, and at the same time it means another new jumping-up to development.

I hope that our future world may be led not by politics and economy, but by culture and humanity.
