Popcorn and cotton candy

Popcorn and cotton candy

[시사타임즈 = 이철원 시사타임즈 회장] The local residents will not be displeased when the Arau Unit invests large-scale equipment and manpower to perform disaster recovery. A secret weapon that would impress the hearts of the local residents was demanded. This is the reason why various resident-friendly activities are necessary and important for dispatching troops. I first selected children as the main target of resident-friendly activities. This is because all parents in the world are aware that it is normal for them to appreciate and appreciate those who are good to their children. And the secret weapon to win the hearts of young customers was the popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and slushie machines. Even in Timor-Leste and Iraq, which I experienced, popcorn and cotton candy were the best ways to get closer to the locals. However, the budget for community-friendly activities was limited, so we rented popcorn, cotton candy, and slushie machines for a year.

As expected, the residents-friendly activity that provided snacks was very popular not only with children but also with adults. When our snack vehicle entered the village, children and adults alike flocked in like clouds. Unfortunately, some of the children waiting in line in front of the popcorn machine ended up eating the popcorn instead of a snack. So, the line doesn't shrink until all the ingredients they have prepared run out, but a bag of popcorn doesn't make one meal, so they lined up two or three times to get on again.

Going out to the local community-friendly activity site gives a sense of sadness and unexpected joy. It's always common to see children saying 'thank you' and 'I love you' in Korean, and sometimes they sent letters of thanks in Korean. As resident-friendly activities became popular, other NGOs also coveted popcorn and ice cream machines. When the U.S. military, who had returned from emergency recovery in the early stages of the typhoon, deployed again to Tacloban for training, the Korean military applied the recovery support model and conducted school recovery and medical support activities for about a month.

At this time, the Americans also borrowed our snack equipment and used it. Among the snack equipment, the most successful was popcorn and the unsuccessful was cotton candy. Popcorn can be provided to a large number of people in a shorter period of time than others, so it was always the first equipment to prepare for every resident-friendly activity. On the other hand, cotton candy takes time to make, but above all else, it was a problem because it melted easily because of the hot weather in the Philippines.

Snack equipment brought in for friendliness was also used for unit soldiers, the difference being that the soldiers had to buy it. About twice a week, we sold food such as bungeoppang and red bean bingsu to the soldiers and gave the proceeds to elementary school students as scholarships. Perhaps because of the meaning of raising a scholarship fund, it became a popular food for soldiers, and we were able to provide scholarships to about 10 children in each school we restored.

Just as our parents' generations remember America with the chocolate and wheat bread that the Americans gave us, children here will remember Korea and the Arau troops for a long time with the sweet taste of popcorn, slush, cotton candy, bungeoppang, and red bean bingsu provided by the Korean military.a long time with the sweet taste of popcorn, slush, cotton candy, bungeoppang, and red bean bingsu provided by the Korean military.
